Welcome to the most exciting blog tab- THE SHAMELESS PUNDIT by your favourite Gweru Kid, Panashe Dave. It was Christmas at the weekend as football fans feasted heavily with their eyes on scintillating football from their favourite and rivalry clubs.
Saturday 17 February2024 was a special day for the fans from Merseyside as they cemented their grip on top of the log table.
The match was spectacular as Liverpool beat a low spirited Brentford 4-1 thanks to the unsuspected contribution of Darwin Nunez.
Ok that’s about it on Liverpool, another club diffused emotions of euphoria to its fans: Arsenal. The Gunners slashed their opponents, a poor and struggling Burnley five nil setting a ritual precedence through which its fans celebrate over joyously only to cry so much as the season ends.
Do not get me wrong, Arsenal are on a great path of success and it seems that they might clinch it this time, they have a fairly strong side and without injuries and a bit of luck, they might just break the curse and lift the esteemed trophy. Aston Villa kept their top four hopes alive as they walked over Fulham in a two one win.
It was a great day for Bournemouth as they managed to force a draw with Newcastle in a match that has raised many questions on whether the boys in black and white are serious on aiming for European football. Nottingham Forrest, another ambitious outfit was also on the ecstatic train as they managed to beat West ham united two nil increasing pressure for the former Manchester United coach David Moyes.
In a battle closely followed by many, the trophy less and seemingly dusted club from London, Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Wolves totally writing off this year’s ambition of any silverware.
The day closed with the biggest match of the day which was between Manchester City and Chelsea. In a surprising manner, Chelsea shoved the humble pill down the throats of many including this writer as they managed to play to a one all draw. Haaland like an amnesia patient totally forgot where the ball has to be placed in order for it to be counted as a goal thanks to the efforts of a determined Chelsea defence and midfield.
It was the first time that most people were convinced Haaland is indeed human and able to fail spectacularly. However Manchester City despite being behind Liverpool have a game in hand which can enable them to bounce back.
On Sunday, the day opened with Brighton and Hove Albion who mercilessly hammered a red-carded Sheffield United five nil.
The best club in England played last and the whole world was happy, and yes it was not Luton. Manchester United extended their winning streak as they are still unbeaten in 2024 thanks to a Hojlund brace and a Garnacho assist in a 2-1 win. KobbieMainoo boy, oh boy, the eighteen year old midfielder has so much composure and sheer talent.
